Lois Lerner Is Just the Tip of the Iceberg
From George F. Will – There’s more, much more, to the Lois Lerner story
Lerner, it is prudent to assume, is one among thousands like her who infest the regulatory state. She is not just a bureaucratic bully and a slithering partisan; she also is a national security problem, because she is contributing to a comprehensive distrust of government.
Of all the scandals that are in the public forum today, this one scares me the most. In addition to the obvious misuse of power and blatant partisanship, this story is demonstrating just how pervasive this sort of corruption is within our federal government. I think that deep down, most people kind of knew that the federal government was engaging in this sort of activity. But, in a form of mass denial, everyone has tried to convince themselves that these sorts of activities are very rare and occur with equal frequency on both sides of the political spectrum.
Both of these points are proving to be incorrect perceptions. The further we dig into this story (and more like it), the more we’re realizing that the reach of the federal arm is long and strong. This means that the corruption we’re seeing is pervasive and not just random acts of individual malfeasance.
Regarding partisanship, it has historically been easy for people to dismiss claims of one side using governmental power to oppose the other. The reason is that government as an entity has gained the distrust of the people in a slow downward fashion over the past half century or so. Government (especially at the federal level) is viewed with about as much contempt as loan sharks or unscrupulous used car salesmen. It has been an almost automatic assumption that all politicians are slime bags and that they play in a pit of mud. Both sides are seen to indulge in petty power brokering and pulling strings to enrich themselves or their constituent blocks of power. Politicians are just “icky”, but they have all been viewed as equally “icky”. Now, that narrative is starting to break down because of the overwhelming evidence that is being discovered that shows…
- … the vast majority of federal government workers, especially at the higher levels of power, are Democratic or support Democratic/Leftist policies. This makes sense seeing that supporting policies to enhance the power of the government is a good method of job security.
- … the abuses of power are overwhelmingly, in both scope and threat to the constitutional restrictions on government, have the left as the power and conservatives as their targets.
- …the lack of interest by the traditional media in exposing the truth on what is going on. It is now basically assumed by more and more members on both sides of the political spectrum, that had the recent Obama administration scandals happened under a Republican president, there would already be impeachment proceedings.
There is a lot of criminality that is being exposed to the public. Let’s just be careful that we don’t commit the crime of not pursuing these investigations to a full and just end.
